A little more than an hour and a half from Barcelona there is a ski resort with 145 kilometers of slopes. Physically united from several points that allow passing from one winter resort to another, and even have a common ski pass, the Alp2500 that gives unrestricted access to both ski areas, and that the resident of the Cerdanya usually buys.
La Molina and Masella seek to unite in a single ski resort
What they do not have united is their commercial policy, or the exchange of equipment. Currently a ski lift machine from La Molina cannot be transferred to Masella, and a ski lift operator or piste employee from one resort cannot work in the other if necessary.
These are small bangs that make us lose competitiveness in the Neiges Catalanes and especially in Andorra, where all the ski resorts work under the same command and exchange equipment without problems. The last example is the four-people chairlift Seig in Grandvalira, which comes from Pal-Arinsal.
In an interview, the President of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat, Toni Segarra, has assured that they are working so that in the 2025-2026 season the ski resorts of La Molina and Masella will be one for all purposes. They are currently in negotiations with the Aymerich Bosch family to find the formula for this agreement, which does not seem to be through a purchase.
A possible project to link the train to La Molina with the slopes by means of a chairlift, would also allow to reach Masella by train.
Thus, Segarra has explained that they are looking for a formula to be able to share income and joint approvals. That is to say, a system similar to the one they have in Grandvalira, where two companies (ENSISA and SAETDE) own part of the facilities, but in the skier's eyes, it is a single skiable ski area under the Grandvalira brand. In fact, the manager assures that
"We have to follow the same path as Andorra and the south of France and work to integrate La Molina and Masella. Personally, I would like the agreement to be for the 2025-2026 season, although there is still some reluctance.
In any case, if we want to bet on the future, we must have a joint skiable ski area because otherwise we will be dead and we will have no product.
We have to stop seeing ourselves as competitors",
From one end to the other, from the Clot de l'Hosptial piste in La Molina to Coma Oriola in Masella, a ski area of large dimensions opens up
In fact, both ski resorts are often marketed to the international market as one. First under the Alp2500 brand, and since a few years ago, under the name of La Molina+Masella.
But at the national level, the commercial policy is to try to sell each one its own season ski pass. While La Molina gives access to the rest of its slopes in the Girona and Lleida Pyrenees, Masella has sought agreements with dozens of resorts around the world, which can be accessed free of charge for two or three days.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
